Project #138 – Broad River

Broad River

This 2,600+ acre property lies along the shores of the scenic Broad River just outside Columbia, South Carolina, providing a diverse array of habitats for wildlife species as well as a scenic backdrop for those recreating on the river.   Species deemed important for conservation according to the state of South Carolina are known to inhabit the property, including Great Blue Heron, Eastern Box Turtle, Wood Duck, and Pileated Woodpecker.  Other important avian species like Bald Eagles, Eastern Meadowlarks, and Neotropic migrants like American Redstart have also been observed.

In addition to maturing hardwood forests that provide food and shelter for numerous wildlife species, the property features an excellent example of managed pine forest, exhibiting conservation forestry practices that maximize both timber value and conservation value.

Because of the riverfront nature of the property and the proximity to metropolitan Columbia, protecting this large tract of land helps buffer the effects of increasing urbanization and changing trends in land use.  By protecting the property’s roughly 11,000 linear feet of frontage along the Broad River and another 92,000 feet along unnamed tributaries, this conservation easement helps improve the water quality for the whole watershed.
