Project #50 – Norton Creek

Norton Creek

This beautiful tract of Great Smoky Mountains wilderness lies just outside the national park boundary and protects steep mountain forest communities along Norton Creek, a world-class trout stream that feeds into the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River.  Boasting a diverse array of spring wildflowers and migratory songbirds, this property also hosts the famous synchronous fireflies in summer and is a private snapshot of the beauty that brings so many visitors to the Smokies.

Norton Creek

Norton Creek flows through the property.

The preservation of the property’s rich terrestrial and aquatic habitat is especially important as the region continues to experience increased conversion of mountain land to residential and commercial development uses.  Protecting land around the boundaries of the park will help prevent this federally-protected land from becoming an island surrounded by anthropogenic disturbance, where wildlife and plants are unable to disperse freely.
